Trips Circuit - but runs with belt disconnected

Hello,
I just got a used (but in great shape) Shopsmith. It kept tripping my circuit breaker when I turned it on. The motor would groan and then TRIP.
I disconnected the belt and it starts no problem. The shafts (middle and upper) turn, but not easily.
Before I dig in and mess around with the belts, is there something I should do?
I've searched a bit to try and find out how to loosen or adjust the V-belt, but I found nothing.
Help!

Clean up the insides and lube it.

Well since this problem seems to still exist after a month you might have to dig in a little bit. beeg suggested cleaning and lubing the machine. One of you previous posts on another thread noted the drive belt got loose as you turned down the speed dial while spinning the disc. That would indicate that the floating sheave on the motor is hanging up and needs to be lubed. There are plenty of explanations on how to do that. Also lube the control sheave. Make sure both sheaves move easily. Then put the sanding disc on and rotate it to make sure everything is free. The drive belt should not be loose. If everything turns okay....hit the switch.
