Any of you out there use any kind of inventory software for the shop? If so what do you recommend.

I have my shop inventory recorded in Excel (in a spreadsheet) but am about to convert that file to Access (a relational data base).

I use Excel and Access as well. Excel is better for short lists or tables such as a list of tap and die sizes, or anything that requires calculations. Access is better for a proper database and searching without the risk of scrambling your data when you sort columns.
However I'm curious, what are you guys inventorying? And why?

Although I can see the importance of knowing what I have the main shorter list to maintain is .... Who borrowed a certain tool and when were they supposed to return it?

I use but have not completed an Excel Workshop Inventory Spreadsheet. I think I found this in a Woodnet.net post a couple of years ago.
It has columns for NAME OF TOOL, MAKE, MODEL, SERIAL NUMBER, PURCHASE DATE, WHERE PURCHASED, PURCHASE PRICE, ESTIMATED CURRENT VALUE and a PHOTO column. At the top of the spreadsheet are lines for name, address, etc. and it keeps a running value total on the inventory listed.
Is there a way for me to add this spreadsheet as an attachment. When I looked at the Manage Attachments, I do not see Excel files listed.
