The original Mark 7 table insert part number was 501379. The pn listed currently for a MarkV 500 is 5013799. Betcha they are the same(physical dimensions).

BTW the pn system was changed from the Mark 5 to the Mark 7. The Mark 5 pn is 2992.

Not even Magna Enginneering could be consistent there. I have seen pix with both names on the side.(not the same pix/machine)

My recollection was that it was called a Mark VII when it was introduced. I do not recall where I saw 'Mark 7' in a pix, but it may have been a pre production model that was being 'reviewed'.

BTW You left out Mark 1(I?) and Mark 2.

Why not! They have been referring to the Mark 5 as a MarkV since I dunno when!

Alec: I resurrected an order sheet from 1964 in my 'archives'. The listing for table inserts says they are for either model. So Mark5, Mark VII table inserts are indeed the same!!!!!(except for the shaper - only Mark 5 version listed)

Is it correct to say that the original Shopsmith was a 500? It was then followed by a Mark 5. Or was the original Shopsmith a Mark 5 Model 500?

Then there came the Mark V Model 505, followed by a Mark V Model 510 and lastly a Mark V Model 520.

The difference being that Mark 5s were not a Shopsmith Inc product and when Shopsmith Inc came into the picture they became Mark Vs.

Now, the latest evolution is a Mark V Model 520 with Power Pro Upgrade and maybe a Mark 7.

My fully complete and original "old" Mark VII also says Mark 7 on the same machine. I would have to look at the other two.
I may quarry my way across the shop and look today.

If memory serves me well the original of the Shopsmith during the 80's was the Mark V (or 5). When SS introduced the larger tables, a few years after I bought my machine they also introduced the table upgrade which could be put on an original machine but they needed a different name for the machine with the larger tables to differentiate the two machines that were in current production at that time hence the 510 designation for the complete machine. Same rational applies to the Pro Fence upgrade kit when it was incorporated into a new machine that was ordered with all the bells and whistles it became the 520. I believe that all three machines were supported for a short period before SS basically stopped manufacturing the smaller (500) tables. I bought my SS in 1983 and at that time if you bought a SS you got a SS. There were no various models at that time. The 500 designation came about as a result of the introduction of the newer versions just to indicate the differences.
