From Bill's very helpful information, it appears that I have been duped into purchasing a clone (likely a Master Craft). He suggested that I post a couple of additional images of the drive shaft assembly and retention ring to confirm this.

I'm sure your not the first one. I've seen several for sale in my area that were advertised as a Shopsmith.
