I am brand new to the world of shopsmith. I just bought a 1991 model 510. If someone can help I have a couple of stupid questions.
1. What is the size of the jacobs chuck key as the one I got doesn't have one
2. What is the function of the plastic coupler that says accessorie on one end and headstock on the other?
3. The handle on my crank to raise the work table is broken, can I get a new one from Shopsmith or will something else work?
4. If anyone lives in the birmingham Al area I my need someone to listen to more stupid questions from time to time

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place to ask questions, especially if the questions involve a Shopsmith item.

Many of your questions have been asked many times and the answers are already here. You just need to find them.

1. Here is an example of how one of your questions has already been addressed. Where can I get a replacement chuck key?

2. The plastic coupler allows to to use the headstock as a power source for other pieces of equipment such as a belt sander, surface planer or jointer. It is plastic so that if you are ever using it and for some reason have an unplanned "hard stop" (like hitting a big nail while sawing) the force of the sudden impact will not be transferred totally onto the headstock. It is a power coupler and a safety device.

3. Yes you can purchase a replacement. They are available from Shopsmith through either online purchasing or directly from the plant in Ohio. All the parts you are likely to need are in the catalog.

I'll second what Tim said. I spend a lot of time reading posts here and finding the answers to most of my questions. Still, if you just can't figure something out on your SS, ask. Chances are one of the old hands will have an answer for you.
