I am working on a rebuild and decided to repaint before I reassembled. I thought I had a good match when looking at the lid on the spray can. Now that I have committed, I realize I don't have a match at all. I like the color (Rustoleum Hammered) but it sure is not a "match".

The original paint is the Shopsmith Gray (Rough) and I painted over the original to preserve the texture. I don't know how that is going to resist the wear and tear but I will know soon.

Original plans were to create a "shorty" but now I have become undecided after reading a few posts by users who don't sound completely happy with their shorter Mark V. I don't know yet.

I have had the same issues with paint colors in the restorations I am in. I used the hammered rustoleum paint and it seems to scrape easily and wasn't as close as I thought it would be. I thought the hammered bronze was close also until I used it. I am wondering if metalic gray is not a closer match. Has anyone powder coated their units?

I have not used the metallic gray hammered (if there such a thing) but I have used the metallic gray on a different project. It was blacker than I had expected. It seems that the color sample on the can lid is just not enough area to be a reliable color representation.

If you have ever painted a room based on the color chart at the store you know that the charts can be misleading.

As I said, I'm pleased with the color just surprised.

I had the same issues when Rustoleum introducted their hammered paint. A person on another Forum stated he was using his powder coating oven to bake the Rustoleum Hammered paint at 200 degrees (I use a laser thermometer (HF $19.99 93984) to insure the 200 degrees) for several hours (2-3 hrs is what I used). This seems to harden the paint quite a bit (same day as painted) and did not burn on the few dozen headstocks I have done.

A note of warning: any other brand of paint I tried burned and/or smoked badly. I converted a 30" stove to only use the oven circuit. I would recommend trying a small item with the Rustoleum Hammered paint first. I have not tried it on any other Rustoleum Metallic, regular or satin finish paints.

I really liked the hammered finish as I have done dark bronze, black, copper, gold, grey & silver. In fact, I have all the power coating equipment but stayed with the Hammered paint due to cost, setup time and I liked the Hammered results.

That color is nice. You can sure tell the difference, though.

You might be surprised how durable the Rustoleum hammered paints are, once they are fully cured.

I have all my painted parts sitting out on top of the fence in the Arizona sun for a slow bake. I hope that that hardens the paint some. Today is the third day after being sprayed.

I think it's going to look real nice assembled dusty. Nice job.

I'll cast my vote with the assembled multitude: I like the new color too, better even than the Shopsmith blue.
