I leave my Shopmith Mark V, Pro Planer and Power Station with the wheels in the down position. That way I can grab them and immediately role them to wherever I need.

Does anyone see a problem with this practice? Will the springs become compressed over time?

I don't operate with wheels down because I feel that it is a potential safety hazard. I prefer that my shop equipment not move when I am using it.

I too leave my wheels down. But only when it is against the wall of my shop. Once I have it in place I retract the wheels.

Only time my wheels are up is when I am using it. By design, those springs would not weaken over time if they remain in the down positiion.

The castors on my '83 machine have been up and down a gazillion times. Most of the time I leave them down and raise them when I want to use the Shopsmith. I don't think you have a worry here.

I too leave my wheels down. Only time my wheels are up is when I am using it. That way if I need to move it, I can just grab it.

My wheels are always down...until it moves when I go to use it.

My wheels are always up unless it is being moved a fair distance.

Since the wheels were done without for over 4 decades, they are not dropped to move it a short distance.

Old habits die hard!

P.S. It is not moved often.
