Good morning. I'm new here and I just had a few questions. My Grandmother gave an old Shop Smith that had a couple problems. The speed control handle was stripped and the speed control assembly was stripped. I purchased the parts and was going to install them but I am having some problems. I read that I am supposed to have the setting up to the highest speed but as I have never been able to turn it on I can't do that. The speed control assembly doesn't want to go in straight. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks, Roger

The links that Mike has provided are good but I prefer this one for the speed changer.

The Speed Changer Session is for just one of many that are available here. I would suggest that you also view the one that deals with lubrication your Mark V. All are interesting and helpful.

This is a common problem. The cause? Many, but I imagine lack of preventive maintenance & intermittent use are among the main two. Although I've rebuilt several headstocks, I don't know your mechanical skill level. Here are a couple of links below, I know there are many other resources and people here on the forum who repair and rebuild headstocks. So welcome to the forum and in a couple days, I'm sure there will be more references others have. It's got a weird little 'search' bug every now and then. Sometimes it works great, other times not. If you can't search, first, open up a list by clicking on one of the two yellow highlighted links that say 'Display all video titles by sessions" or 'Display all video titles by description(A-Z)' Then the search works OK.

The part I like about it is that you can go directly to the session you want to view (when you find it). I am lazy and don't like to key in addresses.
