I'm trying to replace my sanding discs on the 12" disc sander (shopsmith of course) but am having a difficult time. I have the sticky type and not the velcro one and they've been on there a very long time. Is there a trick or special chemical that makes getting these discs off easier? The sandpaper portion has torn off but tons of backing and adhesive still remain.

This can be a problem. My method is god awful. First I rip what I can off the disc. Next I have a chinese 1 in. chisel (somewhat dull) that I scrape the disc with (under power, but slow). Last I wash the disc with mineral spirits.

I know this is a labor intensive, but I've not found a better method.

At the risk of repeating someone elses post (suggestion), I use heat. Most of the time, I can just put it out in the sun for awhile. When that isn't practical, I heat the disk w/paper in the oven.

Also at the risk of repeating what was already said in the other thread, Rick Young, the traveling academy instructor, suggested by hot water. He has several reasons for thinking water was better than heat guns, ovens, and any of the other methods that people seem to have luck with.

I've never tried the heat method, but it sounds like a winner.

I have noticed that some brands of sandpaper stick better than others. I would rather have the more stick than less. (I don't like floppy edges) and deal with the removal problem when I have to.

What about useing mineral spirits? I use this to remove any residue on my corain after scrolling and it only take a few minutes to desolve all the glue.

i just mine recently--it was on there for over 10 years --i used a heat gun --once it got soft i kept moving the gun ahead of the work--it worked great- just be careful if you use a scraper not to scratch the metal--good--luck
