Hi All,

I'm having one heck of a time trying to plane some Hickory for a Kitchen remodel. I've slowed the feed down to almost the slowest speed and take less than 1/64 passes and still get some tearout.

Does anyone know if a spiral cutterhead is availabe from anyone for SS planers?

I don't know of a spiral cutter-head for the SS but you can usually sand wood that you can''t plane.
Here is a simple thickness sander (this one is for model makers etc.) that has a design that might give a lot of guys here ideas.

I don't believe one is made for the Shopsmith, Brent. But you could check with http://www.byrdtool.com as they make the Shelix cutterheads. An alternative would be a drum sander. They do a super job on difficult grain.

How wide are the hickory boards? Would a conical sanding disk be wide enough?
