510 rip fence problems

Greetings:

After about 15 yrs of hibernation, my 510 is waking up again. After doing some cleaning, lubing and probably most of the work required to get her in shape again my rip fence is acting up.

The fence just won't let go of the guide tube. Now that I have "persuaded" it off, cleaned and and lubed it all, it still has issues.

What I see happening is that I spin the to tighten it down and all is well. Now to release it I spin it off and the handle comes of in my hand. What it needs to do is back off the rod it attaches to and it doesn't.

Now the chart above shows a part 214, a roll pin that my "spinner" doesn't have. Having some way to lock the spinner to the threaded rod/ball would solve the issue.

Any ideas?

Is there a similiar spinner elsewher that some dear child might have swapped?

When your handle comes off, you should see the hole for the roll pin that is drilled through the end of the threaded rod that accepts the handle. You should also see the hole drilled in the handle for the roll pin. You will find similar roll pins in the handle that locks the headstock to the way tubes. Anyway, I would go to the hardware store and get another roll pin. I am assuming in disassembling everything that you did not twist off the end of the threaded rod (leaving a piece in your handle) or that you did not shear off the roll pin. Either of these cases will require a little more effort and maybe another part.

Thanks for the response, but I checked that before ... there is no hole for a pin. Is it possible all they used was "lock-tite" to hold it in place?:(

Sounds like a possible workmanship issue if there is no hole in either part. Shopsmith offers a lifetime warranty on workmanship. You could contact them. Or you can mount the handle and drill through it and through the threaded rod for a roll pin.

I gots 2 510 fences - one with a roll pin, one without!

I don't know but I would not be surprised if that "lifetime warranty" is for "original owner only".

How does Farley figure on this one??

The good news I am the orginal owner .... picked it up in Dayton. I live in Cincinnati.

Ok for now I try a jambnut and see if the works. Id not Shopsmith gets a call.

Thanks guys at least now I know I am not crazy... they made some without the locking pin.

Respect:D yer 'elders' Dusty even though we at times be somewhat 'confused'!

I have not a clue where 'Farley' came from! Perhaps too many threads occupying too little space(in my head).

Cross wiring? Too many 'interruptions'? Just plain forgetful?

Take yer pick, they all are potentially relevant.

Musta had my mind on the gavel head I'se working(screwing up) on. It will now be 1" less in diameter than intended!:mad: I do not recommend getting a chisel 'caught' in very dry Walnut!

I think Farley is Frankly's cousin, at least when I am thinking and typing you never know what comes out. Once I was turning a bowl and spelled it bowel and everyone was trying to figure out how it fit on the lathe and what it was looking like.
