Is this a good deal?
My local Habitat store has a used 510 that looks to be in hardly used shape. There are no accessories, miter or rip fence. Just the tables and tubes. The speed control does almost nothing, but it does run. I currently have a 35 year old 500 that Jacob Anderson refurbished for me last year that I use almost every day.

This is an excellant buy if you have room for a second Shopsmith. There are on-line videos available that covers the rebuilding of the headstock if you desire to rebuild the headstock yourself. Any questions will be quickly answered on this forum. Let us know if you buy this Shopsmith otherwise clue us in as where it is located. Thanks.

A 510 rip fence is easily obtained. They are on EB often. The 500 miter gauge will work with the 510 table.

If the motor runs, that eliminates the major concern. I be curious how rotating the speed control dial 'feels'. I was looking at one a while back and it was basically running at slow speed, but would sloooowly increase speed. It turned fairly easily until it reached a slow setting. I concluded that the floating sheave was sticking and purchased it anyway.

If the rust is minimal or otherwise acceptable and no aluminum castings are broken/cracked, IMHO get it b4 someone else does.

Thanks for the insight and encouragement guys! The Lawrenceville (Atlanta), GA Habitat store manager put a sold tag on it with my name and I'll pay for it when I cash in some projects and get a paycheck. I hope to win ebay bids on a miter and a rip fence in the next 3 hours.

Good catch. There is a 1990something 510 in my local pawnshop for $1,500, "down" from $1,800 with no accessories.

OK, $65 including shipping for a rip fence and miter on ebay!
The speed control on the 510 can be rotated continuously without stopping anywhere. The speed stays constant except for one spot where it speeds up a little and then returns to its previous steady speed.
I hope it's just a loose belt.
Where on this forum site are there instructions for fixing this?
I also have Jacob Anderson's Shopsmith Repair DVD's but don't know where the info on this would be. Unless someone here knows, I'll send Jacob an email query.
