hi all, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

i bought a 12" Portable Planer, manufacturer date, 07/91, made in Tiwan, with the '87 SS i bought last May. It's a stand alone model.
I just looked on the SS website for manuals to purchase and its not listed. I'm going to call Monday and see if they have one to buy. in the meantime, does anyone already know if it is or not is, available?? have you been this way??

if its not available, is it somewhere else or can i rent/buy one from someone??

I am assuming that you need the manual for the 12" Pro Planer by Shopsmith.

I have a catalog from 1993 and it is not included in that catalog. There is, however, a surface planer shown but it looks very similar to the one I have.

Is there anything on your planer, other than that Shopsmith logo, that indicates its origin.

Part numbers, manufacturing location (other than Taiwan) or any thing like that. This is a new one on me. I have never seen any thing like this with a Shopsmith logo. However, it does bare resemblance to some of the other surface planers.

Never mind. I viewed the second image and it has the information I was looking for...BUT...it just added to the confusion. Manufactured in, of all places, Dayton, Ohio????

It says "Made in Taiwan For SS Inc Dayton Oh".

I think Ryobi of Japan (back then) released the first portable suit case planer back in the early 80's and it was quickly cloned by many company's. It will be interesting to see if SS stills supports this import or even if the MFG still exist.

well guys, i really appriciate all the efforts. mr. mayo is also looking into the matter and i'm looking forward to what he comes up with.
in the meantime, i'm finishing up some more wiring in my new shop and the planer will sit until i get that done. i'm still working 40 a week and the shop is marching, albiet very slowly....

i will tackle the planer, manual or not. it planes very well as i've planed some 10 inch white oak already. i learned the point of electrical overload and shutdown, so now i can turn the handle just about right for each pass.

i'm very mechanical inclined and i'm going to take pics as i go, in case we really do have a "strange" vehicle here. maybe someone else can benefit from this trip?? i tried to get the bottom rollers out for polishing and found them to look like they are "pinned" and not removable. but then it got real cold while i was in that stage so i quit and came in the house. i did learn the bottom rollers are adjustable via "cam shafts" that the end of the rollers go into. the cam is held in position by allen set screws found inside the unit. the adjusters are rotated by inserting flat blade screw driver in the end of the housing and turnig to the correct height, whatever that may be. i now have them set a couple of thousands from the floor. when i started, one end of the rear one was high, and that caused the board to wander to the other side.
