Mark V & M-7 dumb questions

Well, I broke down and peeked at the Mark 7 to see whassup. It is the E-mail- the one whut features the Lift-Assist for the new 7.

Okay. So, does that mean there's only one L-A and it's on the left end now?
Or are there now 2 L-A's?
Do you Shape on the Left, and drill on da right? And swap that table, with all a yer might?
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?

How about the Ext & Aux tables?
The "Buy it now" window in the SS ad shows the Ext on da Left, and an Aux floater.
Duz this mean that is the preferred settup- on the Left?

Speaking of that, has anyone actually thought about- enuf to recommend one way ot t'other- what side the Ext table should normally be on?
Somehow I automatically setup with the Ext on the Right, and generally use the Right miter slot. Am I wrong?
Is there a "general" rule of thumb for Ext (and/or miter gauge) placement? (Exceptions noted where the fence may need extreme positioning R or L).

[And by the way, regardless of Nick's excellent adventures in the SS shop putting the Ext on either side "equally", that to me is so much poppycock. Mine does NOT roll that way.]

Back to the L-A: if you now need only one L-A, that on the Left side, the biggest question I can think of in re that is : why?

Lastly, and this may be moot, as mine may be unique, if I can't align all my tables the way Nick does in the videos now, why on earth would I think I could do so with both ends being free-floating?

{somehow I'm having trouble remembering exactly why I would up favoring the right side miter slot etc.}

1) We have determined(in spite of one forum member's incessantly thinking the lift assist might work both directions) that the lift assist will not work when tilting to the left. SS now has a quick release fastener to allow disconnecting the tube for left tilting. It also has a stronger tube for the heavier power pro.

2) You be correct asking why. The headstock nearer the left pivot minimizes the need for one.

3) Left Right, we be creatures of habit. Since the table tilts down to the right. using the miter gauge on the right is preferable(especially if you have low ceilings!:D).

4) The aux table alignment for use on both left as well as right has been well discussed on another thread. I agree it ain't as simple as Nick 'demonstrates'. But IMHO is attainable unless the mounting tubes be non-parrallel!;)

Very good points on 2, 3 and 4 (4 acknowledges defective equipment, which is the case in my case).

But on #1-- I asked this one because Shopsmith actually shows a Lift Assist on the left!

????

But it's no big deal, just curious. I'll never be gettin one.

There may be confusion since the latest e-mail that I received on the special Mark 7 offer does show the lift installed on the left-hand side of the picture on the linked web page. But since the pic was taken from behind the machine it is really installed on the right-hand side - when viewed from the normal 'front' of the machine.

Whew! The mystery thickens:

Caption in SS pic: "tilted left for under table operations"

Showing the headstock front view (control panel) under the table, sitting in the air space in which one would normally find a jointer or band saw, in vertical alignment (meaning if one were to extend the quill it would move in the direction of the ceiling).

I'm almost wondering if I installed my headstock backwards, since a picture taken of it from the front shows the PowerPro control panl. I wouldn't put it past me.

NOPE. I finally got it-- "linked web page", looked at all of 'em, and finally found the right one. Yep, pic from the back, so L-A actually on the right, as was "normal". And no other pics had the L-A in any other position. Clever.
So JPG's essplanation (the weight's on that end so you don't need L-A), found nowhere else, is obviously the correct one.

Now I'm looking for a description of the recommended procedure for what to do with the Lift-Assist, installed on the right end, when tilting the machine to the Left for under-table operations.

Gee, I love the way all this stuff is spelled out so clearly in the Upgrade marketing materials.
