I am continually prodded to up grade my version 7-1 to version 8. Are there any benefits to this latest version? I am a creature of habit and sometimes newer is not better for me.

I upgraded and can see no compelling reason to do so. Unless you just want to have the latest. Maybe the guys who use it all the time can tell a real difference, but not me.

I too upgraded but have witnessed nothing that I would call significant. This is likely because I am not a power user. I play in Sketchup more than work.

I upgraded a while ago and I didn't notice any difference at all. In fact, it wasn't an upgrade, but a new installation. I think I had to remove 7.1. Idk... maybe just the old icon didn't get removed. Anyway an upgrade didn't seem to change anything for me. Might be worth it to upgrade if only to stop the nuisance messages.

when you guys speak of v.7.1 or 8, are you referring to the paid version, or the free version?

I am speaking of the FREE version, Doug. I upgraded to version 8 a short while ago but just did that again today. I am currently running 8.0.4811; I trust that does not mean there have been nearly 5000 changes but that is what I loaded today.
I suspect that one day Version 7.0 won't run and users will be forced to upgrade or do without.

Thanks, Dusty. Glad to know that the free version actually is useful. I played with SketchUp a few years ago, and did not get very far. But today I bookmarked the tutorials here so that I could try again to learn how to use it.
I have version 8.0.3117 -- and want to see if I can design a bookshelf unit I want to build.
I was hoping that the paid version was not necessary...

The paid version is NOT necessary for most folks. The free version has done everything I've needed so far. There is a learning curve but it is a very powerful tool.

Version numbers
Major version
8
Minor revision

Build Number or Build Date
4811
There can also be a 4th number on some software the sequential build number
12345
Different strategies are used to to determine the Build Number. Usually this is a serial number assigned by an automated build system. Sometimes it is a date serial number of some sort, other times it is a a sequential number. It all depends on the build system and internal rules regarding numbering. There could very well be 5,000 builds and this one was green lit by QA to be released.

I have 8 and the only difference I see are the additional templates and scales from which you can start. Oh, and they added a female silhouette.
I would upgrade just to avoid compatibility issues with new downloads but I don't see any difference with respect to the user interface or commands so no worries on the learning curve.
