Hello All,

I want to make duck calls and am looking at making a 5/8" pin chuck. The 5/8" bar won't fit in my SS Drill Chuck, so what do I need to bring this all together?

I'm obviously new, and at this point have the basic set of accessories for a Mk V 510. Thanks, and I look forward to what I can learn from you guys.

Although I know many do so, I don't personally use a drill chuck for turning. I remember from shop class way back that drill chucks are not designed for "side loading" or putting pressure on them from the side. You may want to look into getting a dedicated chuck for turning.

IMHO:)

I think I found my answer on the Penn State site. I need to buy the adapter and collet chuck system. I think this will solve several of my problems. Thanks.

In gathering information and trying to make a decision about chucks, I found some good opinions here:

Something to consider when looking at the four-jaw chucks are how they mounts to the Shopsmith spindle. I have an older Nova chuck that uses Tommy Bars to secure the turning stock and it works fine. It's threaded 1 1/2" x 8 and uses one of many accessory inserts available to mount on the 5/8" Shopsmith spindle. Most of those Barracuda chucks are threaded 1" x 8 and come with an insert to fit a 3/4" x 16 spindle. To fit the Barracuda on a Shopsmith you need an accessory adapter to mate the Shopsmith spindle to the threads on the chuck. This Shopsmith adapter extends the chuck away from the bearings further than does the insert used with the Nova chuck, which likely exerts more stress on the bearings, especially if you're doing some serious turning.

The Barracuda 4 chuck also has 1 1/2" x 8 threads but Penn State doesn't list an accessory insert that fits the Shopsmith. I have no idea if a Nova insert would fit the Barracuda 4. Penn State does however have some nice prices on their chucks.
