I have a Hatachi 12" miter saw that I got fro Reconditioned Sales. Unfortunately, I've not had a chance to use it much so I can't give you much of an evaluation. It's heavy and may not work with your typical portable stand. Mine uses a three bolt mounting system where the stands typically are designed for four. You will need to make and adapter. I'm building a stand for mine.

I have the Hitachi C12RSH. It was on sale and watching the video on this page tip the balance. You can use it up against a wall.

I have several Hatachi drills. A Hatachi circular saw that I really like and one of their electric screw drivers. I also have a Hatachi router that I got in used tool purchase I made a few months ago.

I don't know if you've thought of a radial arm saw. Of course that's more if you are stationary. I have one and love it and can do all of the same functions and seemingly more. Dado's, rabbets etc and I can watch the blade. This site has some awesome saws http://www.originalsaw.com/.
More expensive though but, of course, american made.

A miter saw certainly is an indespensible job site tool for a contractor, but I don't have one in my shop. I get wonderful, precision use from Shopsmith's cross cut sliding table, and if accurate bevels are required I use The Incra miter sled 5000 or the V120 miter gauge. There are a couple of downsides to these dedicated miter saws; their universal motors have noise levels that are in the hearing loss category, and there doesn't seem to be any reasonable way to control dust.

In a way this can lead into the discussions about the differences between carpentry and woodworking, and the respective differences in tools.

thanks for Everyones input. After careful consideration I went ahead and purchased the Hitachi C12RSH Dual Bevel Sliding Miter Saw and I picked up a Bosch TB4 Miter saw stand. They are an awesome combo and Lowes had a good price for each. By the way my wife tried the saw and her first words were "like a hot knife through butter" what more of an endorsement do you need.
