My main motor assembly sticks in place and I need a screw clamp to move it up and down the carrier. Any suggestions on cleaning or a lubricant that free up the assemby so it moves back and forth freely. I have a 1950s 10E unit.

The lock wedge is stuck. Wax the tubes.

It turns out that the speed changer assembly, when tightened against the motor, bound up the movement. When I loosen the nut that hold speed changer in place, the motor moved freely. Should this nut not be tight?

NO! The long setscrew should be tight against the motor mounting bracket 'post', but the nut should not be more that finger tight. If tightened, it DOES put the headstock in a bind to the way tubes.

I suggest an almost finger tight nut with a jam nut on 'top'.
