Gentlemen, i have a question for you-Could the magna sprayers compressor be used to drive air tools. In particular air sanders?

I have never used the SS compressors but I would very much doubt that they would run an air sander. I have one and it will run my 5hp commercial compressor to death.

I agree with Mark. I doubt the output of that diaphragm style would be able to keep up with the very high demands of an air sander (5 to 10 C.F.M.). That being said, you could attach an auxiliary tank which will give you some reserve to use. It might be enough when used together to drive a brad nailer but I doubt much more than that. To keep up with the demands, you would run it to death. Although I don't own one, I don't remember seeing things like pressure regulators with the Magna compressor.
Remember, the early advertisements showed using a common garden hose as the feed so there can't be much pressure there.

When it comes to volume required air sanders are near the top of the list. As someone said they can be a real challenge to large commercial compressors.
I know body shops size their compressor to be able to run one or two DA sanders or jittebugs. When they have it right and if they aren't using a sander they have plenty of air to power a half dozen or more spray guns and other tools.

I have one and would say no. It runs constantly (no pressure valve) and doesn't create enough pressure for tools.

I believe these guys are right.
That does not preclude the possibility of running a smallish (but bigger) compressor using the Shopsmith by setting up a belt drive to a compressor mounted on a custom mounting. It is not something I would probably do and you would want be careful of overloading the SS. Still if you have a need and have a compressor unit and tank etc. the possibility is there. Its not something that I would do for extended running.
