When I returned to Green Valley this year I discovered that we had had visitors while we were away. Besides filling a shop drawer with palm seeds (little dates) and building a nest on top of our car engine they also ate my Dust collector.

This may not seem like such a good thing to some of you and I admit I was a little peeved myself at first. However the lack of a DC bag caused me to do the canister conversion with the Wynn Industries "Reno your HF DC" package. Man, What an improvement. That thing will suck the chrome off a trailer hitch now and to top it all off I'm pretty sure it's quieter.

Oh yes, it's a finer filter as well.

Very nice Paul! Do you have a link or comments on the motor/fan mod? Did you but a separator in the garbage can?

Actually it's a really simple quick and dirty cyclone of my own design. Here are some photos:

This is just a 4" plastic 90 deg. DC elbow. I turned some tabs of garbage can out when I cut the hole and screwed them into the elbow, then sealed with duct sealing mastic. I gasketed the top of the can with foam pipe insulation.

The centre of the cyclone is a plastic 5 gallon pail with the bottom cut off. The large diameter means no air flow restriction = lower speed air = less dust carried past the garbage can. The flange on the pail fits snugly on the MDF lid.

After that you just park the Harbour Freight DC motor unit on top of the pail and attach the hose. No sealant required, it fits really snugly.

The cyclone works really well. I only get very fine dust in the lower bag.

That is awesome and simple!

I am planning on putting a Wynn filter on my HF DC when weather warms up more consistently (probably next month), and thought a separator would be a good addition but don't have extra floor space for the typical stand-alone can. Your design is easy and no extra space required.

Cheap, easy, compact.. it works for me. You can even get a garbage bag in the can for easier emptying, just needs a hole in it for the inlet elbow.

Thanks for the pictures, Paul. Looks like I'll be copying that separator as well. It's a pain to reattach the plastic bags after emptying them. I've had the Wynn filter for some years now, and like you I'm well pleased with it.
