what does the knob do on the feather guard for the jointer?

I have a retro on my old Magna and no paper work on it's operation.

I believe the back knob is for adjusting tension, the center start knob doesn't seemm to do anything when tighten.

The center knob (the one in the slot ) is for regulating how far the guard will open. Loosen the knob and lock it down about half way along the slot. You will not be able to open the guard further than this position and will act like a feather guard once you see how it works.
