I have started to make a 4 inch X 24 inch drum sander similar to a Sand Flee. If there is much interest, I can try to figure out my daughter's camera and post pictures.

If you keep it simple I'm definitely interested. Guess I'm just lazy when it comes to making jigs and set up stuff.

Thanks for the link, nuhobby. I had searched this Forum before on the subject, but did not see the pictures before because I was not registered or logged in. (duh)

My project is much less involved. I have the drum already made from PVC pipe and used used these flanges:

from http://www.robotmarketplace.com Since it is a 5/8 flange, I was able to turn the plywood ends with them attached to the flange. The flange worked just like a SS faceplate. I did set up the lathe to get the drum pretty round, but decided that it should not be critical because of the velcro. I'll try to post pictures this weekend.

I would suggest getting it as round as possible even if that requires a power sander. Velcro or not, you do not want ANY bump bump bump... as it turns. Also any high spots will cause the bump bump bump to destroy the velcro! JMHO!

I got the drum within what I would say is 1/100 of an inch. I could not come up with a good way to true it with a lathe chisel fixed to the carriage, and just did it by hand and caliper finishing with sandpaper glued to a board. (I don't know why I didn't think of using the SS 12 inch disc. doh!) I was afraid to sand more for fear of creating an egg shape. Things seemed to be going this way when marking with a pencil and seeing what was being taken off.

If it does not work, I am not out much except time. PVC pipe is cheap and it looks like I will have to buy much more velcro than I need to get the 4 inch wide adhesive backed hook like I want to go with the 6 inch wide sand paper. The hardware can be taken back off. It is a learning experience in any case.
