Mystery Arbor

I have an arbor that came with my Greenie that I just found rolling around in the truck. I'm not sure which arbor it is, anyone got an answer?[ATTACH]12293[/ATTACH]

I'm pretty certain that's not a SS specific arbor. It's a generic arbor and you can still get one like it at Lowes. Maybe designed for adding a buffer wheel or grinder wheel to an electric motor? They usually come with a couple of flanges too.

FWIW, I found that type of arbor is a pain to use on the SS because if you back the set screw out a little too far, it falls out and disappears at light speed into some far corner. The set screw is also not the SS standard. To solve the problem I turn a steel ring roughly 1.5" diameter by 0.6" wide and press it onto the body and drill and tap for a SS std. set screw. Looks like this when done:

Also known as a motor arbor and come in LH and RH versions.

I have one that looks just like that, although not in nearly as good of condition. It came in a box with other odds and ends that contained a mixture of MK 5 and 10er parts. My guess it was designed for the 10er. Mine had an abrasive wheel mounted when I got it, although it also had two stabilizer washers on each side of the wheel.

If it has 2 set screws, it wasn't designed for the Shopsmith (MV or 10ER). Shopsmith arbors have one set screw designed to work with the flat "reverse taper" on the spindle. An arbor with 2 set screws is generic for use on any motor shaft (with matching diameter) that may not have a flat (tapered or not). The second set screw is to give additional gripping power on the spindle.

Thanks guys.
I was thinking it was maybe for the grinding wheel. I'll put it aside to be used or "re-purposed" later. I'm thinking it might be good to use for a buffing wheel.

FWIW: More likely a sears craftsman product.
You could drill and tap the outer set screw hole to 5/16-18 and use a 'SS' setscrew(round or flat bottom).
Definitely get washers prior to use!!!!!!!
