I've heard opinions that wobble dado bades can damage a tablesaw motor over time. Any thoughts on this, specifically on a Shopsmith?

I'm not considering buying one, I prefer the stackable type. I'm looking for a Shopsmith and want to consider if I should be wary of used ones that come bundled with a wobble dado, assuming it had been used on the machine I'm looking at. Should I be concerned about this at all?

I don't believe there is an issue. I have used a wobble dado on my Mark V for years with no problem.

Most people don't use the dado that much if there was a potential problem.

My humble opinion.

I do not think this could be an issue for the shopsmith either! The motor is just too far up the power train to be affected by any imbalance caused by the 'wobbling'! Now the quill will be more likely to 'feel' that, but IMHO it is too solid mechanically to be an issue there either.

In any event, it would be bearings that would be affected, and they are replaceable!

I agree. I've had a wobble dado blade that I've used on my Shopsmith for about 20 years with no problems. The dado doesn't cause any more detectable vibration than any normal blade I've used.

Sounds like one of those popular myths proposed by woodworkers not having one and disdain those that do. (ugh, it can't be good, it's so cheap!) (Norm didn't use one) (Not advertised by xxxxx)

I've only used a wobble on my saws. First on a radial arm saw and then on my 510. (over thirty years of use) No problems what-so-ever. I specifically showed my wobble in the recent thread about making toy logs, like Lincoln logs.

Also contrary to popular myth - the wobble dado does not shake the quill or the table. It is always balanced. When one tooth is out, another is in there by balancing the blade.

I've had a wobble for many years. Never and issue. They do not cut flat bottom dados's however. This then presents the opportunity to use your plow plane or shoulder plane to clean them up.
I love planes. I just flattened a piece of firewood to turn into an award with an axe mounted in it. I did the flattening with 2 hand planes, My low angle and high angle #5's.
