I'm in the process of adding a second carriage to mine on the left of the head stock so I can add an extra table. That will take care of it for me, but good idea.

I got the parts for the shaft extensions in the mail today

There is a range from where the fence is completely mounted on the main table, to where the fence is completely mounted on the extension table. The mounting rail of the tables do not match very well without 'cocking' the fence. The extra slot allows accurate ripping to widths within that range.

My MK V was purchased new in 1973, when Shopsmith returned to business.
Mine has the slot in the table. It was probably leftover stock from the previous ownership. From what I've read the earlier SS had a 9" blade. This makes sense due to the slots smaller size.
I've never used the slot. I have concerns about ripping with no splitter, or guard.
I've been able to align the aux table with the main table, so I'm able to use the fence mounted half way between them.

What did you use to make the extension? In case someone

was inclined to make this gadget?

If the mounting rails do not match well, then it would seem that if the fence is mounted on the extension table it would not be parallel to the blade. Before I upgraded to the 520, I would have the fence straddle the main and extension tables with no problems.

Now that you have upgraded, is this a problem? It should not be!

No! I had no problems with the 500 fence, and it's even better now with the 520 as the tubes make aligning the tables easier.
