I am about to acquire an older(gray) Scroll Saw(ss mount).

Are there any things I should be aware of regarding use and maintaining(restoring?)?

Hidden gotchas?

I do not know if is coming with a manual or not.

TIA

Does it look like this?

If so it could be a Magna 18" Jigsaw. I just purchased one myself and have the manual. if needed I can scan and post it for you. It covers general operation, maintenance and an exploded view of the parts list.

There is a fellow in Lexington reporting that someone with a funny hat is trying to steal a saw just like that one for less than $75. I'll bet that light makes easier cutting.]

I have a Hawk scroll saw, which is one of my favorite toys. To impart a few items I have learned from experience: Tension is very important...you want the blade to twang. Don't try to overuse a blade. When it starts to drift or begins to feel like it is resisting, get a new blade. They don't have to bend or break to go bad, a dull blade can take a lot of the fun out of a project. Purchase an assortment of blades, and change them often to accommodate the type of cut you are making. You don't need to throw the old ones out, just switch them out to make the cut. My thinnest blade is a 2/0 and I commonly use #2, #5, and #9. I have a tube of #12 but they are kept for rough cuts to trim stock wood. I also have a few different #5's, skip-tooth and reverse-tooth and I pick the blade based on what cuts the wood on the table the best.
Mostly, just have fun. The scroll saw can be used to make some ultra-fine creative work. It takes a little patience and a little practice to make your cuts without leaving to much of a trace.
Enjoy the new toy.

Nay Nay Not True! It was priced quite low enough as it was!:):)

BTW It came with a manual.

Little bit of light rust, but decent shape over all.

Wonder how it would look like 'Gold/Coppertone'!

P.S. The PO was quite patient and met me more than half way(geographically). He had 'another' nibble, but that individual wanted it for parts. Bad thing to say to the P.O.!!!!! He wanted it 'kept alive'. So do I!

P.P.S. I knew those 'Mystery Parts' would come in handy some day!!!

I would love the help
