10E speed changer Maintenance?

I have had a 10E serial #5398 for about 30 years. Unfortunately, I have not been doing proper maintenance on it. Lately I started turning pens and have been using it a lot. The hand crank speed changer is now rattling loudly and started spitting out small flicks of brass. Of course I have stopped. Would it be wise to apply grease into the sleeve the sliding pulley rides on. The sleeve has always been loose around the rod. I am not sure what the sleeve should be riding on since I don't see any bearings in the sleeve. There appears to be a brass sleeve inside that rides on the steel rod that holds the pulley mechanism. I am open to any suggestions.

The instructions for the speed changer is attached. The unit requires period lubrication as noted under the care area of the instructions. If you haven't already, I would remove the floating sheave and inspect and clean the bronze bushing. While apart I would also inspect and clean the shaft and lubricate the center sheave that floats. There have been some folks over on the 10erusers group on yahoo that have replaced the bushing.[ATTACH]12875[/ATTACH]

I have removed the sheave. It appears the bushing has been worn so that there is quite a bit of play around the shaft. I should contact the users group you mentioned to see about the bronze bushing. It should be replaced. The bronze bushing would not move inside the speed changer even when I loosened the allen screws.
I have had wobble in the speed changer since I got it and my lack of understanding about its lubrication didn't help. I may have to remove the sheave and use a direct drive pulley.

Skip Campbell, owner and modurator of the Yahoo Group Shopsmith10ERusers is an excellant person to contact for any 10ER questions and many parts and modifications. I believe he has been replacing the bushing with needle bearings in the Speed Changer. Many of the members will respond to each of your questions. Since you own this older Shopsmith, join this group as they have many excellant files and pictures available that can answer many of your questions.
