Just picked up a Mark 5, green, from a buddy of mine. It was his dad's. Sat arouind unused for quite a bit. Plugged it in and the motor turned very slow, speed set to max, and popped the breaker after ~30 seconds.

Going to disassemble the headstock cover for a good cleaning. Hopefully its just clogged with sawdust.

I live in Chelsea, MI between Ann Arbor and Jackson. I picked up a 520 model last month. I am in the middle of redoing my shop now to better accomdate it and the accessories. So, the learning curve is steep, and the hobby is new to me.

I see your original post was in May. Back then I had not even discovered the Shopsmith product! Thank you for instigating a "Michigan Club" thread. I am proud to be Member Number 3, and have this be my first post.

The smaller 3/4 HP motor in the greenie does not like to be started when set to fast.

As Beeg suggested, manually rotate the shafts and turn the speed to slow. A sanding disk or faceplate makes a good hand crank.

If it has sat unused for that length of time, I suggest oiling the sheaves. However they may be gummed up and very difficult to move. If so they need to be freed up before trying power again.

Since it is already set to fast, remove the motor belt from the motor pulley, position it away from the motor, then turn it on. The motor should start briskly - if not the motor need attention.

With the belt still 'out of the way', try adjusting the speed control and observe the control sheave moving(it is ok with the belt removed to adjust the speed control). That should tell you if it is gummed up.

The floating sheave on the motor shaft is difficult to check. Since it is under spring tension, you be fighting both the gummy and the tension. Unfortunately there is the most likely place to be gummed up.

If you find any gumming , I recommend complete disassembly, cleaning and oiling. Those parts move Sooo easily when clean and well lubricated. They need to do so as well.

I have been known to work with a shopsmith in MI but only when I'm in the UP, I think this MI club so far is only people south of the bridge.
