Legs/tubes removal ????

How do you remove the legs/tubes from the table saw table, extension table, etc.? Also, on the legs with the raising/lowering gears cut in them, do you mark the leg before removing in order to replace it in the exact same place, so the gears will work correctly? If so, what are some methods of marking?

500:
NOT recommended. They are force fitted. There are no positioning parts.

Now if one is persistent enough, they can be removed and reinserted. It is up the the persistent one to guarantee proper realignment. Drilling a small hole through both the trunion boss and the tube prior to separation may work.

505-520
There is pin that is staked that holds the post to the trunion. Less risky, but still not easy.

Too dicey for me to try without a VERY GOOD REASON. What is your 'reason'?

My reason was to make it a little easier to clean and paint. You answered my question--won't attempt it now.

On a Model 10, It is simple(set screw!).:D

I've been wrestling with the table height tubes on my 500 table since yesterday. I want a tube out so I can make a custom steady rest for turning wood. Without breaking the casting I've tried everything I can think of after popping the roll pin. Pulling, bearing puller, turning...just everything. So after much thought I'm going to cut the casting on the side. Luckily I have another table but this is a real pressed fit. Moral to the story, don't try it unless you have a backup table and can stomach cutting.

Have you tried heating the casting?

No, didn't heat it yet. Maybe I'll try that. Thought about it but went straight for other options. Haven't cut yet so I can still try it.
Rainy day? Heck this is the best weather. Slight wind but this whole storm thing was overly hyped. Louisiana is laughing about what we experienced. My rule of thumb is that if the weathermen say nothing then we will really get it. If they talk about it then we get nothing.

Here we go. I did heat it and it did move out of it's house. Here are the pics for those of you who need to know how to do it.
First heat just the casting. I did drill a hole in the tube itself to put in a rod to help turn it free. There is a hole in the casting above the rollpin. inset a screwdriver between the casting and the tube and flex it to push the tube out. I used the rod through the tube to turn the tube back and forth to loosen it. Note, keep the falme right oon the casting and heat all the way around.

Free at last. Should have heated it yesterday. I guess I was too preoccupied with my bearing puller. Do you need a hole in the tube? Made my life very easy so I could turn the tube and tap with a hammer. It will have no effect on it's usage in the carriage.
