I had posted on here a bit back in Jan/Feb when I was looking into buying my first used SS. I ended up buying a 1981 Mark V that was in pretty good condition.

I hadn't really touched it since then because I was finishing up my masters thesis, we were expecting our third child, and were in the process of buying our first home. Well, the thesis is done, the new kids arrival has come and gone, and we just moved into our house last weekend. So that means I now actually have a life and can get this machine refurbed!

I call this a refurb, because it is still in pretty good condition overall, and really just needs some light rust removal and some new paint in a few areas.

I am also planning on taking the headstock apart and going through it thoroughly to make sure it is in good condition and no big problems that could cause bigger trouble down the line.

Not sure if it will come through in the picture. But the tubes have just a slight hint of rust on part of them. This will probably be one of the first things I tackle. I don't think these are bad enough to warrant the potato water in PVC method, or the evaporust in PVC method. I have read that Scotch Bright (what exact type is best?) with WD40 works. Would you recommend this for rust that is this light? What about steel wool; is it recommended for use on the tubes?

The casters and the metal parts of the leg assemblies have the worst rust of any of the parts. I am thinking that removing all the metal parts and soaking in evaporust might be the best approach?

The back side of the jointer, and the bottom and legs of the main table both have some rust on them. What would be the recommended approach to cleaning these up?

I have done a bit of reading on this forum, and have picked up a lot of good ideas, but there is still a lot I don't know, and having never done a refurb on a SS before I am sure there is a lot that would be common sense to others that I wouldn't think of. As I go through this refurb I would appreciate and help and advice that more experienced members have to offer.

Great helpers you have there! Enjoy the twice as long because soon they will want to cut some stuff on the table saw - by myself dad!, talk about nerves, I'm still shaking and it was two days ago.

I took the cutter head out of the jointer and disassembled it, then I covered the jointer top with tape and sandblasted it. The casters I disassembled and wire wheeled all the parts then painted and reassembled them. You might want to do a wheel upgrade to some urethane wheels while you have them apart. The legs I also sandblasted, I tried wire wheel but the sand blast did a much better job much faster. Just be sure to use fine sand so you don't pit anything.

What size are the wheels or is it a complete caster replacement? Is there another thread that describes this? Mine are getting bad enough that I don't like to move it anymore.

These are the wheels then you use bolts, washers, and lock nuts after you cut off the pins that are thru the stock wheels. You use the same bracket just new wheels.

Hi and nice looking machine. For the rust on the jointer I would use a product called "Extend". It is made by Loctite and is sold through most automotive supply outlets. I would suggest the spray type not the brush type. The product attacks the light rust chemically and changes it to an inert compound that will not rust again. Use it WELL VENTILATED areas only and follow the directions exactly. After 24 hours the rust will turn black and it should be painted without any sanding of the treated area. Do not remove all of the rust only brush off the loose stuff the rust is necessary for the chemical process to take place.

Me again. I forgot to mention that your way and bench tubes are in very good shape. If anything I would use some 3 in 1 oil and 400 then 600 wet/dry sandpaper to remove the rust. Then clean with mineral spirits and wax and buff.

I think I remember seeing someone post about how to hook the tubes to a drill to provide the rotation. Any suggestions?

Knock off the loose rust first and then brush off the dust. Then Apply the Extend and when it cures it can be painted. I have used the SS touch up paint and find that is an excellent paint and I did not prime before I painted.
As for the tubes, I used the wet/dry paper and cut the piece just long enough to wrap around the tubes and hand sanded. Yours are in good shape and hand sanding would be OK. I have never turned the tubes to clean them (I don't have a setup for that). Don't oversand or scuff the tubes.
