Sorta-Newbie and greenie age question

I have had a Shopsmith Mark V for about fifteen years. I picked it up at a garage sale while in high school, and it has travelled with me ever since. I now have a larger shop and have some dedicated machines now, making the SS a bit redundant. It is in decent condition, but is in desperate need of maintenance and good ole' TLC.
Due to the "wonderful" state of our economy, it has popped up on my list of things to sell to make ends meet. I came here to see if I could get a sense of its value, and boy did I get that sense. After seeing all of the restorations and such, I'm not sure I want to sell it. In fact, I'm now thinking of restoring it. Thanks SS community, I think.
By the way, I waded through several greenie threads, and still can't get a sense of when mine was built. My serial number is #261039. I'm guessing either late 1953 or early 1954, but I'm not sure. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Steve
