10ER way locks require persuasion

I have a 10ER that I inherited from my dad about 25 years ago. My constant companion is a rubber mallet that I use to free up the way locks - I loosen the screwhandle several turns then have to wack it several times with the mallet to get the locks to back off the pipe - especially the rear lock that holds the nut. The nut isn't captured by the lock so when you loosen the screwhandle the nut just backs out of the lock. Was there ever a change to capture that nut so when you back off the screw it will also back off the lock? or has anyone come up with a better remedy than the mallet?

It may be time to pull the wedges and dress them up. Sounds like they may be mashed a bit. There is info over on the Yahoo site and possibly mkctools.com on repairing the wedges. As far as wedges go, there are a number of versions single wedges, double wedges and brass wedges. Skip Campbell (mkctools and Yahoo 10er group moderator) is very knowledgeable on the machine.

When I picked up my 10E, we had to use a winch to get the headstock to slide off the way tubes(we did not know any better at the time). Removal and cleaning and waxing made them work quite well.
