I just received ads for Shop Notes and Woodsmith from August Publishing. Has any out there have any experience with these publications?

Both excellent. I have built many of the Woodsmith projects and their hardware kits are fantastic. They supply all the needed hardware or speciality parts and you make the rest.

Shopnotes has some excellent jigs and ideas to make woodworking better.

I would second ed's comments. Both publications are very good. I don't have a large number of Shop Notes but I have several years worth of Woodsmith.

I purchase some of the parts kits even when I don't build the specific project.

I have every issue of both magazines since they first came out. I have yet to receive an issue that didn't teach me something or contain a project that I didn't want to build. They have put many projects on my "to do" list. I'll never get them all done but won't run out of ideas either.

Great magazines. They have something for every woodworking skill level.

I subscribe to both. Other subscriptions have come and gone, but these will continue to come to my mailbox. Woodsmith has great projects while Shopnotes is more about technique and jigs, etc. You won't be disappointed with them. Get the free issue and cancel if you don't feel their worth the money.

Sorry I completely disagree, I prefer the advertising in exchange for paying a lot less for the magazines and a lot more articles every month. I also find the ads help me find new things I did not know existed.

That said I subscribe to both and love them. I have successfully built their box joint jig and used many of the tips in Shopnotes. Woodsmith for me is more about dreaming since most of the projects are beyond my ability. The kits are great, and also where they don't have a kit they have great resources on the inside back cover of every issue where you can find everything they talk about in the issue (almost like ads but very targeted).

Woodsmith is the first woodworking magazine is subscribed to. After subscribing and receiving 7 additional publications (still get all of them) and a few years passed, I decided to try out Shopnotes on a special deal. Have never been sorry. Both these mags. are loaded with ideas and projects. The descriptions of projects are so complete, they are easy to alter sizes to fit your particular needs. If it's not a financial problem, you can't go wrong by trying them out for a year. These are magazines you will want to keep. They have indexes once yearly that allow you to look up a particular project in a past issue, or purchase a past issue.

I must be werid but I like advertising, it keeps me informed on new tools and what is going on in the industry. While I usually have a subscription to Woodsmith and Shopnotes I have always had a subscription to Wood just to keep myself abreast of the new developments in the wood working.

Also as someone mentioned the ads usually bring the cover cost down, however that is not always true.
