I picked up a 10-ER and I'm trying to dig out some info to get it going. The motor works, but there are some missing parts. Speed control?????? There is just a belt around the 2 pullies.

So, there are no new Shopsmith parts in any capacity that go with the ER, and any replacement parts have to be found elsewhere(ebay,garage sale, craigslist, etc.)?

Mine doesn't have handles for the drillpress. Can I use any rod that fits the thread or is it tapered? I have many questions, but I'll start with these.

Welcome to the "Family".
I don't want to chase you away but there is a group on Yahoo that caters specifically to the 10 and 10ER machines. There are also folks here that own the older machines and know quite a bit about them. The folks here are always willing to help, so just keep asking questions and come back often.

Yahoo sucks anymore they offer little to no security, which is why I just dumped my account.
as far as parts and stuff, Ebay is excellent for parts, and there's always Skip Campbell of MKC tools in Texas.
He is the honest to god "model 10 answer man" and he sells parts and invents stuff all the time for these babies. here's a link to Skips site. He's a helluva nice guy and even sells DC variable speed motors for these.

The speed changer was an option (a well sought after one these days) and they can be found on Ebay usually, ranging from $50.00 dollars to as much as $150 or more even, depending on condition and ballsiness of the seller.

I have a Mark 5 and a 10ER.
Love the 10ER more better because it's cast iron.
And it's pleasing to the eye.

I haven't had a problem with Yahoo but I know some who have. I know about Skip and have visited his website. He sure is an expert on those machines.

Funny, no one addressed these 2 things.

Basically, ANYTHING that mounts on just the spindle WILL work on your ER. (The speed increaser or speed decreaser for the MkV/5 won't, because it also mounts on the way tubes.) Table saw blade holder will mount, but you want to get a 5/8ths shaft, not the 1.25 (or whatever size) for the Mk5/V. The drill chuck will work, but look for the Jacobs branded one, they're better.

Now the quill advance handles.

Yes, you can use what fits the thread. However, I'd advise getting grade 8 bolts or studs. I built a set of 6, using studs and knobs from Mcmaster-Carr. If I could remember the thread size, I'd post it. I got 6 inch long studs, with a square center section. (Most of the area between the threads was square, instead of round. Makes it EASY to tighten down. (Tighten gently, you're going into aluminum.)

Oh, JOIN Skip's group on Yahoo! Great bunch of guys, and all of them are BIG ER fans. You'll see me there, along with quite a few people here.
