So I bought a Mark VII think it was an incredible deal on a Mark 7. I now have a machine older than me. I turned it on and it works. A limited set of accessories came with the unit.

i have some questions about getting this machine to a semi-modern state as I don;t know the status.

It looks great with no rust, it was in the California desert.

So the questions I have are.

1.) What should I replace for a PM on this thing? v-belt, bearings.
There is a guy on ebay selling stuff but his prices seem high, are there other sources for bearings and belts? Vxb?


2.) Who do I go to to replace the bearing in a quill, they seem to need to be pressed in? Can I add a second bearing to the quill? What is the official bearing size?

3.) Does a Mark V jig saw and belt sander fit on this bad boy?

4.) How does a router bit attach to the quill, using the drill bit chuck?

5.) I didn't get the shaper attachment, can a Marv V shaper attachment work?

The most important thing to do first is to properly lubricate *****EVERYTHING*****[/B] especially if it has been in a very dry climate. Belts do probably need replacement(dry climate again), but that can wait until replacement is the only alternative.

Not all that difficult with a relatively inexpensive press/puller from HF Can I add a second bearing to the quill? NO What is the official bearing size? I do not know for sure(for a VII), but probably (6202-10-2rs) 5/8" x 35mm x 11mm double sealed(as used in all other single bearing versions).

3.) Does a Mark V jig saw and belt sander fit on this bad boy? YES - As well as all other SPT's that use the two tube mount!

4.) How does a router bit attach to the quill, using the drill bit chuck?

5.) I didn't get the shaper attachment, can a Marv V shaper attachment work? Maybe!(depends on whether you like drilling holes in the worktable[not recommended by me]) There was a unique shaper fence version for the VII, but they are rare. You could mount a Mark 5(or V/500)(or V/510,20) shaper fence to a base and clamp the base to the table(not very convenient, but better than holes and much easier to 'discover').

If you have not read the sticky post at the top of this(Maintenance and Repair) forum section, do so!

The two most vulnerable(and irreplaceable) parts are the plastic way tube rack gear teeth and the plastic(nylon?) speed control cam. The small bearing in the end of the control sheave that holds the cam follower that rides on that cam can become dry(unlubricated), get hot, heat the follower, and melt the face of the cam.

There is a guy in Anaheim, name of Simon Eng. He sells alot of stuff through Ebay, but also sells outside of Ebay.
I have bought several items from him, he knows his stuff and his prices are very fair. here's a link to his rebuilt quills.

I bought an upgraded quill (2 bearing) off of him and he sent it right away, no delays.
Very fair prices.
