Help !! When I extend the quill to any length and lock it into place, it doesn't hold. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be ?

The most likely cause is a missing washer or it being in backwards. Part number 501317 (Spherical Washer) #53 (that parts drawing get smaller every year so I hope I got this right).

This often happens when the pinion is removed, the washer falls off the shaft and down in to the machine without much notice. If it is not there or backwards you will not get the quill to lock.

I'm sure some will come along with the location of a thread or two with details and pictures. If not I will look them up late tonight.

I once, after taking my machine apart, I put one of the two "knurled faced" washers in backwards. Easy fix after figuring out what I'd done.:o

If you are not taking the entire headstock apart try putting a piece of string on the pinion shaft on the opposite side of the depth stop. When you draw the shaft out of the headstock the string will capture the washer and prevent it from dropping down in the motor pan.
