Why do the legs have to have new holes drilled? I would assume it is to accomodate the wheel diameter?

That should be an "extremely" popular upgrade.

I like the idea! The price is not bad either. A little more ground clearance so you do not catch on uneven surfaces would be a welcome change.

Let me see, my shopsmith is on it's second set of casters, machine purchased new in 1976, I think they cost me less then $2 each but I don't recall the year I did the replacement. The current ones are still in good condition, got some years on them yet.

If they were to wear out today I could go with the original ones $15.96 + S&H $6.99 = $22.95. Or I can get the premium ones for $35.99 + $8.49 = $44.48. or just under double the price.

Worst case I fall in love with then and decided to do other 3 machines.... $107.97 + 16.49 = $124.46 more $$$ grand total $168.94

To bad for me as I don't see spending that much on casters unless I win the lotto, and I don't play.

Don't think that will happen. You have to be able to lower it to get it on the ground, and raise it to move it, all that will remain the same. The difference is that a new set of holes moves everything up to account for the new caster height.

I hope this makes a lot of the old caster wheels available on EBay. I need one replacment wheel bracket.

I agree with JPG - this is one of the first times in a while that I have seen a really reasonably priced (in the grand scheme of things) upgrade. I was actually pricing replacement casters the other day and the cheapest I found was these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BN ... 4B4GRTFT08

Those should fit, and are 1" larger diameter. However, they are a little more than 1/4" narrower. Unclear which is the big winner.

For those curious, nice casters run from $3-$15 per wheel plus shipping, so ~$9 per wheel is on the higher end, but still within the realm of reality.

Other options that should probably fit:
