I know the nova chuck is primarily used to take the place of a faceplate. My question is whether the nova chuck can also be used in place of a lathe center for long turnings supported on the other end with a live center. If so is there any advantage to use it in this way?

I am a new owner of the Nova chuck so I'll be watching this for comments from the real turners which I am not.

The little bit that I have used my Nova I must say I like it.

Well ya could use it that way. Or ya can get a Steb center, so ya don't have to keep taking the chuck off and on.

I can't think of any advantages using the chuck instead of a drive center, but one thing to think about is that you can't turn the end that is gripped in the chuck. Now this may or may not be a problem depending on what you're turning.

I'm no turning expert but wouldn't the chuck allow for easier/more precise remounting of a workpiece that you needed to take off of the lathe? You can leave the piece in the jaws, slide the head back, loosen the set screw and take the turning off with the chuck in place. When you remount the chuck, there should be no change in the center of axis. Can also be done with a drive center, but you need to me a little more careful to make sure it all lines up if you try to remount. My $0.02.

I have a steb center for my SuperNova2 chuck as well as a screw center for it. I use my chuck for all turning. I like the extra spinning mass to dampen vibration as well.
