Hello everyone. This is my first post. I recently bought a good used Mark V model 510. It did not have a drill bit chuck; lather centers or sander drums so I have been looking on eBay to buy some. I am confused in some listing for 1/2" chucks. Does that mean they will only fit a 1/2" spindle? My model 510 has a 5/8" spindle. Or does that mean they will accommodate up to a 1/2" drill bit?

I also need to buy 12" sander disks and 6" x 48" abrasive belts (as it came with the SS belt sander). Any recommendations as to a source for either or both of these two items?

I looked at the shopsmith belts and disks. They are more expensive than many online sources. In my ignorance, I am trying to learn if the SS items are truly worth the additional price or not. Please lead me through the decision making process as to where to buy belts and disks and at what price.

For sanding stuff, you can use any abrasive with the appropriate dimmensions. The standard SS discs are 12", the belt sander disks are 6"x48", and the strip sander is 1"x42". There are lots of places online to get that stuff, though I found that locally it can be difficult. Woodcraft had some 1x42 belts of the right size, and my local sears had some 1x42 and 6x48 belts...though not a great selection.

For the lathe, on the tailstock end you can use anything that is MT2 (morris taper 2). for the headstock side you either need to use the shopsmith stuff, or get an adapter for whatever you are looking for. ie: a 5/8" smooth bore to 1x8TP adapter and then use a 1x8TP faceplate, 4-jaw chuck, etc.

For the lathe toolrests, they are 3/4" in diameter. Some places sell rests with a 3/4" diameter, and penn state industries sells adapters, so you can use a variety of other tool rests. You may be able to use 1" toolrests assuming the post is long enough.

I am pretty sure the Shopsmith lathe tool-rests are 3/4" unless you have the Shopsmith Universal tool-rest banjo and are missing the 1" to 3/4" adapter.

I've found the Shopsmith green belts to be SUPER! Just can't wear them out. In my opinion, you just can't go wrong with shopsmith accessories.

You can always buy cheaper and buy again and agai......

A Shopsmith chuck, which the linked Jacobs are made for will accept the 5/8" spindle and will accept up to 1/2" drill bit. I got one from eBay for about $10 plus some shipping. Cleaned it up and it work super.

Also, you can look on the Shopsmith website and compare what is on eBay. But, very often you can buy from Shopsmith directly at the same price or lower than a bid price on eBay. Some of those folks bidding just want it without realizing you can get it cheaper from Shopsmith. If the bid price is more than 1/2 what I can purchase it from Shopsmith, I'll just get it from Shopsmith. But, always voting with my pocketbook to when and what I can buy to bring my system up to par. Still have a few pieces to acquire. The aluminum sanding disk from the 10ER's will also fit the Mark V's. The best to you.

Good call, you are correct. I never realized that the "tool support and shaft assembly" was a 1" to 3/4" adapter.
