I came across this after putting 'Shopsmith' into Amazons search engine.
What is it and why would anyone pay $210 for it?

I'm not sure exactly what it is but
this might give you some idea. It appears that Shopsmith, Inc. is being used as a business model against which other companies are being compared.
Here is still another hint which also tends to confirm Shopsmith, Inc
(Dayton, Ohio). I'm curious but not $210 curious.

Looks like a great study of comparing "apples to oranges". Probably an egghead got an extra degree from the study, or a graduate student got some points. Maybe even used a federal grant.

Now you can buy a copy for only $210.

With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of barriers to entry, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company’s financial indicators on a worldwide basis.
So they chose to benchmark a company that won't ship overseas...
There's a load of companies named in dustys 2nd link, I tried Hardinge and there it is:
HARDINGE INC.: International Competitive Benchmarks and Financial Gap Analysis (Financial Performance Series) by Icon Group Ltd.
So I'll assume most if not all companies in the list have a $210 pdf available.

You don't need to assume. You can go there and see for yourself. I did not look at all of them but I did some.
They appear to all do the same.
Unfortunately, we cannot see the real interesting stuff without coughing up $210. I'd have to take that out of "parts and supplies" monies so I guess I must remain ignorant.
