510 fence stuck

The 510 fence has two adjustments; handle and a knob. The knob (the picture says it is 241 and calls it a rollpin) turns a threaded rod which goes through the infeed clamp (239) and into a retaining ring (240). The knob has come off with the fence tight in place, so the fence is unmovable. I tried turing the knob back on but it does not go on tight enough to be able to unscrew the threaded rod. I am thinking of epoxying the knob to the rod and, if I still can't unscrew, then blasting it with WD40. Any better suggestions on how to free? Thanks, Jim

Update Jan 6, 2011 Success! Here's the story. The threaded rod appears to be 1/4 by 14; I couldn't find any nuts to fit (could find 1/4 by 16). My knob did not have even a hole for a roll pin, but that sounded like a good idea. I took the knob off and used a drill press to start the hole for a 3/32" roll pin using a #38 bit. Dad suggested I stop before I hit the threads, to guard against a burr preventing the knob from screwing on. I threaded the knob to the rod and drilled all the way through the rod and both sides of the knob. The roll pin fit in smoothly and the threaded rod unscrews now. I put tape on each side of the roll pin to prevent it from coming out someday due to vibration. Success! Thanks very much for the suggestions. Jim

Is it possible to thread a nut onto the shaft to act as a jam nut and then put the handle on and tighten the nut against the handle. This may lock the handle so you can turn the handle and remove the fence.

It sounds like you have broken or missing rollpin (241). The Knob that turns doesn't seem to have a number ???. How this works is that the knob is threaded on to the shaft. It is then aligned with the hole in the shaft and the rollpin is inserted through the knob and shaft. This is what prevents it from unscrewing.

With the knob off you need to look through or attempt to look through the hole in the knob and see if piece of broken roll pin is still in the hole or not. You can also check the shaft for a broken piece. If you can see through then screw the knob back on until you can see through the knob and the hole in the shaft. For now you can use a small nail through the parts and turn the handle to get the fence off the machine.

You will need to get a new roll pin, either shopsmith or maybe a hardware store if you can find the old one to measure...

Here is a picture of the hole in the handle, just to the right of the lead.

The knob was listed on a catalog from the good old days as item 241, (514384) knob. An item number search has it listed so I don't know what is with the parts list at:
