Quill Bearing Question
Posted: Tue Jan 10, 2012 3:36 pm
My bearings arrived in the mail. I'm replacing the two drive shaft bearings, two motor bearings, and the quill bearing. I have not installed the new ones yet.
The drive shaft and motor bearings appear to be the correct parts - just what I ordered.
I have a question with the quill bearing however.
The old bearing that I took out was marked: "FAFNIR 202KDD5 USA"
The new bearing that I received when I ordered a replacement is marked: "FAFNIR P202-5 WR Z 17 SFA TURKEY 202KDD5Z17-PF550000"
When I hold the old bearing (FAFNIR USA) in my hands, I can detect no play radially or axially. When I hold the new bearing (FAFNIR TURKEY) in my hands I can not detect radial play, but can detect a good amount of axial play.
Did I order and/or receive the wrong bearing, or did I receive a bad bearing?
From what I have been able to sort out in searching old threads, the 202KDD5 is inherently a C1 bearing, and I should not be able to feel play either axially or radially. Is that true, or does the 202KDD5 come in different tolerance classifications that need to be specified when ordering?
My options as I see them:
1. Contact the company I bought from and ask them for details. I purchased the bearings online from E. B. Atmus Co., Inc. I'm not mentioning their name to throw them under the bus. Like I said, I don't know if I asked for the wrong thing, or if I just got a bad part. I'm mentioning their name because I know that some of you have ordered from them in the past and may be able to tell me what I need to ask for in order to get the right part.
2. Install the old bearing, and return the new.
3. Return the new and re-order from a different place if E. B. Atmus doesn't carry the right part.
4. Buy a 2 bearing quill from Bill Mayo.
You can probably tell that I really want to choose option 4, but probably shouldn't spend the money right now. You may also be asking "why are you replacing the quill bearing when the old one feels good?" The answer is that it got soaked in solvent when disassembling things. I then soaked it in brake parts cleaner, submerged it in grease, heated it then let it cool. So in theory the old bearing should be cleaned and re-lubricated, but as long as I was ordering bearings anyway, I figured a couple extra bucks for a new part and peace of mind was worth it.
Any advice?
