A fellow shopsmith owner, who lives close by, at the young age of over 80, has had a little trouble lifting his bandsaw onto his SS machine, This system really works very well for him, and he can use the SS machine and Bandsaw with very little effort. These pictures, which I am including{ Ihope you can see them, 1st time I have tried this} are what he has come up with. Next, he said is the planer lift mech. and then the 6" Sanding machine lift mech. I thought this might be interesting to some SS owners. Thanks again, and I hope the pictures come through

Thank you, dougrl. This was a touching post. It brought tears to my eyes.

It is so good seeing someone doing what it is that they want to do in their later years.

It looks like I better start looking for a winch and a way to hang it on a track in my garage (woodshop, that is). I am fast approaching the time when that extra help may be required.

I mounted my Pro Planer for just this very reason. I had trouble moving that puppy when I was a puppy.

Any idea what that "crane" cost? Do you have details of the equipment used, I like the idea and would like to implement it BEFORE I have to.

Hi Paul, I think Ed bought this electric cable hoist for around $100.00, it is a 100 pounds on a single hook and on a double hook 200 lbs.Cable travels at 8 FPM on a single cable and 4 FPM on a double cable. Our Princess Auto here in Saskatoon Sk. Canada has one on sale now, for $168.00 110 volt, 600 pounds on a single cable, and with PULLY BLOCK this CAN GO UP TO 1200 LB lift, They are quite common around here, farm stores, tool outlets, Home Depot, Canadatire stores have them. Hope this is a help. to you, Ed mention only thing about this, that he wished he would have got a longer track, which are available. Cheers Doug.

I have found cable hoists with 400 lbs capacity (much faster which I don't think is a good thing in this application) for well under $100 at Target, Sears... but can't find any information on the track or how to connect it. "Trolleys" I have found start at over $1,000 and can hold tons, of course not connected to my garage ceiling. It looks like Ed found something much cheaper.

I have done something similiar. I have a 24x24 shop with an open ceiling. I attached a small block and tackle (you can order pulleys from HF and make one) to a ceiling joist. I have a large hook on the lift end that fits over a way tube and with the head locked I can lift everything into the drill press mode. I taped the large hook to avoid scratching the tube.

I have been wanting to make a second B&T to lift the band saw up and out of the way. I will have to attach it to a rafter higher up so I don't bonk my head.

Remember double pulley systems make effort easier than single. However, more rope is needed for double than single.

I don't want to install the SS lift as I have built in cabinets below which won't allow for it.

After 65 we need all the leverage we can design.

One more thing, if your ceiling is drywalled then attach with a bicycle hook. Be sure to screw it into a ceiling joist.
