I just bought a Shopsmith Mark 5-B ss197064, does this tell me what year it was made? Also what does the B stand for?
Thanks in advance, wlg64

I would say Jan/Feb 1985 was the birth date. You can see that here.

When you find out the significance of the [-B] let us know.;) i.e. Idunno!

Does the "B" refer to the headstock casting type?

If so, when did they start that? The 'B' casting has been around since the 1950's, and the 'C' was a 1990's thing. We be looking at a 1984 vintage(we think).

Just a guess, but is that "B" really an "R" and something Shopsmith adds as part of a headstock rebuild?

I called SS and they told me it was made Jan. 1985 Model 500. It was advertised as Mark V-B, guess the seller I got it from did not know ether what the B mint.
Thanks to all!
