What is this inside my quill?

I just bought a 1982 Mark V 500 and am getting it into shape.
When I removed the quill, this washer (spacer?) fell out. I have not seen one in many searches for quills.
Can someone identify it and tell me the way it should be inserted? I'm not at all sure the placement in the photo is correct.
It appears that the larger, flat side should go toward the motor.

It belongs there. It is a shield for the quill bearing.
I'll let some one else confirm how to insert the "top hat" washer. I am not certain. I would have put it in as depicted in the photo.

It is also there to steady the splined end of the shaft when reinserting the quill and it aids in lining things up with the nylon coupler.

After having another look, I'm now thinking that the smaller end of the spacer goes toward the nylon coupler.

That is how I have observed it, and with a bit of imagination, the 1963 manual exploded parts drawing looks that way.

Thanks, JPG, you are right.
Took another look through all of the pdf manuals I had downloaded and finally found a view that shows the smaller end toward the nylon coupler.
edit: a further search confirms,thanks to ddvan79:

I also tapped it onto the spindle using a piece of pvc pipe, so that it would not rattle around.
