I just bought a used Shopsmith Mark V-B serial # 197064, I think it was made in 1984-85? It has no saw guard upper or lower. I need to get saw guards for it. What part #s do I need? Also what does the B stand for? This is a pick. of the info plate.

I have a 1956 Mark V without saw guards and would like to know what and where to get the upper and lower guards with see through upper guard and dust connection on the lower guard. Do I have to upgrade the table to a 510 to do this?

I would say that was a very good option. Big improvement over the old aluminum upper guard. Also if you buy an old one off of Ebay and it has seen a lot of use it might be so sloppy that it could easily flex over into the blade. It doesn't take much wear at about 3 different joints to add up to a lot of side flex. I also think that a clear guard prevents some of the "out of sight, out of mind" thinking because you still see the blade.

I have this setup for my 500.

It has a splitter at the rear of the table, not a true riving knife. You can not remove the guard and just use the splitter!
You have to drill and tap to mount the mounting bracket to the table.

It is cumbersome to adjust and use. The lateral adjustment for the upper guard/splitter is sloppy and comes loose in operation. The splitter is stamped steel and flexes very easily being so far away from the blade.

The dust collection chute is so inefficient there's really no point. The right side of the dust collector/lower guard bolts to the trunion cross bar (You have to drill and tap holes to mount it)

I do not recommend.

Better to search ebay for 510 parts and do the upgrade piecemeal. I think I'm about to start doing that. That or keep searching Craigslst for that dream 510/520 with everything I want for less than $300 (Like that will ever happen)

I agree that the dust collection ports on the 500 are pretty useless. I have connected a DC to both ports with a Y and see almost no difference. I've stopped bothering to hook up the hoses. The saw guard can't be used with the table tilted.

Gee, and I have the upgraded then upgraded again upper/lower sawguard for the 500 that I'm putting on eBay next week. It may not be the most efficient dust collector but it may save your fingers or a hand. I'm selling it because I did upgrade to a 510.
