My old (83) but recently purchased ShopSmith V has a clear and recycling "rattle" when used in the drill press mode. Obviously something is wrong. Every part I have taken apart seems O.K. Is there a bearing that could be bad? Thanks.

First instincts is that something may be slightly loose. First place I would check is the nameplace/service plate on the back side. Remove it and then turn on the machine. Continue eliminating rattles by tightening everything until the rattles cease. If after all is tightened and you get the same rattle, then it would be time to ask again. More experienced folks will be along later.

First of all, 83 is not even middle aged, let alone 'old'!:D

Rattle in vertical:

Could be control sheave rattling against porkchop(most likely).

Could be control sheave rattling on idler shaft(worn keyway).

Could be floating sheave rattling on motor shaft(worn keyway).

Could be fan sheave bumping against motor end casting(least likely).

Could be loose pulley on main shaft or quill spline.

Run with belt cover and access plate off and narrow it down by looking for something moving whole rattling. (look do not touch!)

Also indicator dial is notorious for rattling.
