I saw an ad on craigslist for a "1950s shopsmith", can anyone give me some info on how to do a quick check of it to see if it is a bargain or basket case? I watched a video about it but still not sure. After I look at it and take epics I would like to post them and get input from experienced owners. Thanks,jim

Hmm...I can't bring that up here at home right now. I was looking at it at work today though, strange.

If it 'runs', start it and adjust the speed control. The speed should track the dial setting with out any significant delay. The control knob should turn easily towards fast, but some resistance will be felt when adjusting it towards slow. Run it up and down a few times. Listen for any strange noises(I realize you may not know what is 'normal').

However unless the headstock is cracked, it can be made to operate properly with a bit of effort.

If 1950's it is probably a 'Greenie' Mark 5. It could however also be a 10ER. Major difference! No internal speed control.

Well, I hope it runs. If not, it's most likely a no go. The video mentioned something about frozen sheaves, can I tell if they are frozen? If they are frozen and I turn it on and adjust the speed, will it break?

If they are 'frozen' and you do force the speed control you can 'break' it. Actually you can cause damage by adjusting 'unfrozen' ones with the spindles not turning.

i.e. If it does not turn fairly easily, do not strong arm it.
