I have just bought a jointer off ebay, it needs a bit of a refurb, is it possible to find out the ral code for the grey paint on a 2003 model 510.

I hope I am wrong but I doubt that you'll get that information from any reliable source. The good news is that you can purchase (from Shopsmith) sprays cans of paint the match closely (depends on how old your equipment is).

The RAL Chart, in my opinion has nothing that matches. The Shopsmith gray has a touch of blue that does not exist in the RAL Chart.

Have you considered choosing your own color? I need to rebuild and refurb my jointer this spring. As an aside, I botched the drilling of my existing legs for the caster upgrade and need larger holes to accommodate a tray under the tubes, so will take a set of legs from one of my old 500s to make those modifications, and paint them along with the bandsaw cover and jointer. Probably a maroon, since the colors of the University of Montana are maroon and silver/dark gray.

Also, by choosing your own color(s), you have the opportunity to get paint from a big box store for significantly less than SS.

If you truly want the gray, I remember a thread that refers to a specific primer that does a decent job of matching the SS color.

I have an auto body paint distributor near. Last time I needed paint matched I just took the part in and they match up a can of spray paint for me to purchase.
Look for this type of service near you.

I have a '90 510 and found that Rustoleum Gray Primer is almost a perfect match. I posted something here a few months ago. https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=12086

Look at the third picture to get the right one. I found this a closer match than what Shopsmith offered.

I needed to touch-up my two SS 500s several years ago. I did it when I put on the larger new wheels SS now sells. It was mostly on the lower end panels. I used a three inch sponge roller. To get a match on the paint, I took a small SS part colored with the SS grey to Lowe's. They have a scanner that will match any paint. Bingo, I got a pint. Worked beautifully.

I bought some cans of the SS grey (they have two variations IIRC, depending on the age of your machine) - yes, they cost more than cans of spray paint at the hardware store but the color match was perfect, the quality seemed good, and the first can (I bought 3) went a long ways before it finally ran out (I did multiple coats on one of my 10Es, as well as the carriage and a few other parts on one of my 500's - certainly one can would be more than enough to do a jointer). If you're a stickler for the color being as close as possible to the original color than this seemed like a pretty easy route to me and the cost difference was fairly insignificant in the big picture. I just waited until I was already placing a SS order for other stuff and threw in the paint as well to save on the shipping.

I would suggest that you not allow it to set around very long before you use it. I bought two cans from Shopsmith. They sat in the shop for two, maybe three months before I was ready to use them. When I did, they would not spray at all even after excessive, vigorous shaking.

I don't know if it was the storage time or that they would not have sprayed the day I got them. At any rate, I got no sympathy from Shopsmith CS.

Interesting...I used one of the cans right away and the others have sat in the shop for the past 8+ months...I'll report on how they function when I get to using them. Usually I don't have trouble with spray paint unless it's been partially used...I have to wonder how long they sit on the shelves at SS (or at the hardware store for store-bought paint) before being used. My guess would be the cans had issues when they left SS and it wasn't discovered until you tried to use them (?) Hard to see unused spray paint cans failing after sitting on the shelf for a few months. Hopefully my results will be different when I get back on my restoration job and I'll be sure to report here either way.
