Being so far removed from mother nature, many in newer generations do not have a clue relative to how predators survive(kill/eat). Tis for sure not a pretty sight.

However in spite of PETA that is entirely 'natural', and as our creator intended.

Who are we to imply we should not do the same!

'Humanely', yes. After all we are humans and supposedly experience compassion etc., but we do have survival needs also(Albeit less than in the past).



Enough philosophical meandering for today.

You mean like the original Duck Die Nasty (and the frogs die nasty too:eek:), in that case with the owl call perhaps it should be Chicken Die Nasty.

ps My wife and I do watch Duck Dynasty, lots of fun.

The call is made from bocote which has a high amount of natural oils. I think I will still take the time to put some mineral oil on it due to the moisture that will come with using it.

The end grain is quite porous, it will be interesting to see how it takes the oil. I know that I wasn't ready when I started the sanding, I only had regular sandpaper which clogs very very quickly. Need to get some thing with an open coat. I'll be ready for the next one.

It wasn't that I was ignoring the post so much as waiting for the next installment. You are very good at providing detail and explanation and I was just waiting for more. I also figured with the weather the way it was, you might be having a frustrating time getting anything done in temperatures barely above Arctic!

The correlation between the owl call and turkeys is something more I'll check in to. A neighbor is an avid bird hunter. I was going to ask him to take my oldest nephew out to hunt turkeys and saw this strange box and lid configuration that is a turkey caller. Now I'll see if the owl caller is useful.

As I think about it, I guess I'm also somewhat envious of anyone who can get out to their shop. With the snow and bitter cold I couldn't get out there and now that all the snow is melting (way too fast) the french drain cannot keep up and the floor of the garage has become a mini lake.

I for one promise to no longer not respond to your posts (unless of course they border on as boring as mine - and then you are on your own )

I know little on game calls, so I ordered an owl call, they sent me the parts and now I have a owl call that sounds like a sick duck.... I have to figure out how to use it to make it sound like an owl......

I watched a couple of youtube videos and it appears it is more then just blowing in the end. That's about as far as I got.

Parts wise this is my pen turning mandrel. I use a 1/4" router chuck from shopsmith and the #104-108 mandrel rod from woodturnerscatalog.com, the end has a place for a 60 degree live center to fit (nova live center is what I used). The game call kit provides the "adapters" to 1/2" and 3/4" holes.

For these two calls I'm building I went with blanks that they have with the holes already drilled to the correct size. If I were to do more I would drill my own if it saves money, it's a toss up $ wise sometimes.

When I was growing up we had chickens, so did my uncle across the street and my grandma just up the road. Eggs for a while then a nice chicken dinner for the most part.

One of my cousins and I were on "chicken hawk" duty, any circling hawk was a chicken hawk by the way. By way of watching them circling we were able to convince them to stay away.... I do believe it was a parental method of keeping us 4 year old's from wondering too far off.

A more dangerous and real threat came from weasels. Bears seem to think that the chickens presented a meal also but for the mess they would make of things I don't believe they ever got a meal.

A 410 by the back door was how things were done in those days.

Thanks for the reply. We have a pet owl that I have been feeding red squirles to. We are over run with the little red devils so I have been thinning them out. In the mean time an owl moved up by the house and sits on a limb where it can see in the window and watch over the bird feeder. I can stand in the window and watch it but when I get the camera it takes off. I think it is a snow owl as I have seen it back by the beaver pond several times. We also have an eagle come around every so often. Yes they do use an owl call to locate turkeys. The one I have is a different style of call.
